Cioffi impressed by Crawley’s latest win

Crawley head coach Gabriele Cioffi is seeing a steady improvement in his side this season and is keen for it to continue following the 1-0 home victory over Mansfield.

The Reds, unbeaten in their last four league games, are eighth in Sky Bet League Two having finished in the bottom six three times in the previous four seasons.

Bez Lubala made up for a first-half penalty miss to hit the only goal as Crawley maintained their record of scoring in every league game this season.

Cioffi insists he is not looking at the table at this stage and his first priority is to reach 50 points.

“We are not looking at the table but we need performances of the same intensity and if we can do that we can challenge anyone,” Cioffi said.

“Our target is 50 points and this is three points towards our target.

“It was an open game but we showed character, fitness and personality. Fair play to the boys.”

Lubala, signed on a two-year contract from Birmingham, now has seven goals in nine games this season, and Cioffi said: “Bez got his reward.

“Well done to him, but it is the mentality of the whole squad that I`m pleased about.”

Mansfield boss John Dempster wants to see an improvement from his side after this defeat left them with just two wins from eight matches.

He said: “A deflected goal won the game and it is fine margins, but it is about making the most of opportunities.

“It was an even contest, both keepers had good games and I’m disappointed we haven`t scored a goal; poor finishing has cost us.”

Dempster feels ruthlessness is the key to the Stags’ form picking up, and added: “Over the period of games this season we haven’t been good enough.

“At times we’ve been conceding silly goals, have been snatching and missing opportunities; we have to take responsibility.

“I am gutted, this club means a lot to me. No one can fault our effort but we weren’t ruthless enough.

“It is important we go into the Cambridge game on Tuesday with a positive frame of mind.”
