Scunthorpe boss Hurst delighted after snapping winless streak

Scunthorpe boss Paul Hurst could not hide his delight at seeing his side’s winless start to the season come to an end at home to Morecambe.

Three goals in 16 first-half minutes earned the Iron a comfortable success over the Shrimps, lifting them off the bottom of the League Two table in the process.

“I’m genuinely pleased for the players – because they’re the ones that get the results and have to go and play the game – and for the fans, given it’s been such a long time coming,” Hurst said.

“We’ve got try to build on it now. One victory doesn’t make everything right, but as I’ve said previously, not everything has been wrong in terms of our performances for large parts, it’s just silly mistakes or little spells in games that have cost us.

“I thought we looked edgy at the start of the game, probably understandably given the position we’re in, but once we got in front you could see the confidence come back.

“The second goal in particular gave us that bit of breathing space and suddenly we looked like a team with an extra spring in its step.

“It’s great to get the victory and a clean sheet. That’s something ticked off and now we have to look to do it more often.”

For all of Scunthorpe’s dominance, there was a touch of fortune about their opener – with striker Jamie Proctor keeping his cool to volley in the rebound after visiting keeper Barry Roche had saved his penalty, awarded for a shove on Kevin van Veen.

But after getting in front, the Iron put the struggling Shrimps to the sword, with Van Veen following up to convert from a tight angle after a shot from Alex Gilliead had hit the post, and Matthew Lund wrapped things up before half-time after Roche had kept out another Gilliead effort.

A late penalty save by home keeper Rory Watson, to deny visiting substitute Adam Buxton, compounded an awful afternoon for Morecambe, who were accused of lacking “backbone” by boss Jim Bentley.

He said: “It was a poor performance – no question – but I’ve never seen so much of a swing in terms of a feel-good factor as there was after that first goal.

“We gave Scunthorpe a penalty, but the one thing I can’t get my head around is how slow we were to react to it being taken.

“If you don’t back your goalkeeper to save it, you may as well go to the halfway line and wait for the kick-off.

“Scunthorpe will look upon it as good play after that, but for me we lacked backbone.

“After the first goal they steamrollered us for the rest of the first half. We couldn’t wait to get back in.

“To come away against a team that is struggling and give them three goals, that’s really disappointing.”
