Paul Tisdale cannot hide delight after MK Dons’ first away win of season

Paul Tisdale promised to treat his MK Dons players to fish and chips after they battered Blackpool 3-0 for their first away win of the season.

Russell Martin, Jordan Houghton and David Kasumu did the damage as the Dons climbed into the top half of the League One table, level on points with Blackpool.

Tisdale hailed their counter-attacking display and says he has been waiting for such a positive away performance.

“We’re going to celebrate with some fish and chips on the way home, the players don’t normally get that,” he said.

“I think we’ll enjoy it and have a good trip home after a good afternoon. I manage to spin a positive in my mind before every game, but I don’t think you could have predicted 3-0.

“I knew we had it in us. We’ve had some disappointing results on the road this season.

“We won 3-0 because of the way we played. We countered really well and defended well. Maybe it’s one of those games where if you try to push that you don’t win it 3-0.

“There’s more there and at half-time I was encouraging them to take more of a chance and show more confidence.

“It’s not black and white where you’re either attacking or defending, there has to be a middle ground.

“They came close with a few headers but Lee Nicholls didn’t struggle with much today.”

In contrast, Blackpool manager Simon Grayson has called his players in for extra training on Sunday following such an abject performance.

The Tangerines are now winless in five league games and Grayson admits he is fed up with making excuses for his players, who have conceded six in their last two games.

“Of course I’m hugely disappointed and angry with the players,” he said.

“We’ll be in for training tomorrow (Sunday). I defended the players last week (after losing at 3-2 at Coventry), but I can’t defend anyone out there after that kind of performance.

“There’s a lot of factors you have to put together to win a football match, and we didn’t do that today.

“You’ve got to make sure that you defend properly, both as individuals and as a team. We didn’t do that at all today neither.

“In the midfield area you’ve got to win those individual battles, and when you’re at the top end of the pitch you’ve got to be ruthless, be inventive, and basically you’ve got to do whatever you can to score goals.

“We were a soft touch right the way through the team, and the opening goal was another that was avoidable.

“That allowed them to then sit back and defend well.”
