Ayr moved level on points with Scottish Championship leaders Dundee United after they claimed a 2-0 win over the Tangerines at Somerset Park.
The Honest Men took the lead through Daniel Harvie in the ninth minute when he got onto the end of a long ball which cut through Dundee United’s defence to slot past goalkeeper Benjamin Siegrist.
Ayr had calls for a penalty appeal waved away by referee Bobby Madden in the 26th minute and put the Tangerines under pressure ahead of the half-time whistle, but could only take a one-goal lead into the break.
Siegrist denied a swift counter-attack by Ayr in the 57th minute after Louis Appere had a shot blocked at the other end.
Ayr were awarded a penalty in the 74th minute after Liam Smith’s foul and Alan Forrest stepped up and scored to double the hosts’ lead and wrap up the win.
