Simon Grayson questions Blackpool professionalism

Blackpool manager Simon Grayson questioned his team’s professionalism after his side threw away a two-goal lead to allow Coventry to take all three points in a thrilling 3-2 win.

The away side were one up within the first minute. Liam Feeney’s cross from the right found Sullay Kaikai all alone at the far post. His delicate volley looped over Marko Marosi and into the net.

Kaikai grabbed his and Blackpool’s second on 38 minutes. Marosi denied an onrushing Callum Guy, only for the ball to fall at the feet of James Husband who teed up Kaikai for an easy finish into an open goal.

Coventry pulled one back just two minutes later when back Fankaty Dabo’s deep cross from found Matty Godden in the box – the forward hitting a first time finish past Jak Alnwick.

Wesley Jobello then scored for the home side on the stroke of half-time. Jordy Hiwula had space in the box, his lay-off allowing Jobello to hit powerful effort beat Alnwick and into the roof of the net from close range.

Coventry then found a winner in time added on. Aston Villa loanee Callum O’Hare was sent through by Hiwula and the midfielder smashed the ball past Alnwick.

Grayson said: “We were in a real strong position, then a real lack of professionalism to a certain degree, doing the basics has cost us the game.  Three balls into the box which we should have dealt with.

“We gave a lifeline before half time, and we’re disappointed to have lost the game. You have to make sure your shape’s right and you concentration levels are high – we went looking for a third goal instead of being compact, we lost our shape, but we learn from these lessons.

“We weren’t strong enough in the second half and we’ll be working on it on the training this week.”

Coventry boss Mark Robins added: “It was a bit of a strange game. In the first half they scored a freak goal in the first minute. We had a new starter which changed the dynamic.

“To come back from two down in the manner the game started was outstanding first and foremost, coming in at half time at 2-2 changed the dynamic.

“We were outstanding in the second half, the way we played was really good. Callum O’Hare’s goal was really good, it was great to see it go in.

“Blackpool are a really good side, physical, tough side to beat so I’m thankful we came through it and pleased with the manner  of the performance which is really something we can be proud of.

“The work we’ve done on the training ground really paid off for us. It was a really good hard fought win, so I’m very happy.”
