Woe for Warne as Rotherham suffer late derby defeat

Rotherham manager Paul Warne kept his players locked in the dressing room for over an hour after they were beaten 2-1 by local rivals Doncaster in the South Yorkshire derby.

On-loan Jake Hastie had sent the Millers into the break a goal up when his free-kick from the right evaded everyone and beat the unsighted Ian Lawlor in the Rovers goal.

But they succumbed to defeat in the second half, with veteran James Coppinger equalising after 66 minutes, when his scuffed effort from Niall Ennis’ cross had enough on it to beat Lewis Price, before skipper Ben Whiteman struck from 12 yards after Ennis was dragged down in the box by Michael Ihiekwe.

Warne said: “Unfortunately we didn’t get the second goal when we were in the ascendancy and one goal is never enough. We didn’t get it and it has come back to bite us.

“Their subs made them better, the impetus swapped around 60 minutes and we weren’t doing as well as we had in the first half. They had a 15-minute period when they were definitely on top and we had to ride the storm. The penalty was very harsh and soft, and I think draw would have been fair result.

“We didn’t rant and rave at the players, but we gave them some home truths. We need to be, psychologically, a bit stronger and better on the ball. To lose the way we did after playing so well is disappointing.”

Rovers boss Darren Moore was full of praise for his players, who produced a sterling second-half comeback after showing little before the break.

He said: “It was a tough game, a typical local derby.

“But the endeavour, the spirit of the players, the belief, the understanding, the ability to stick to what we do here is what won it for us in the end.

“I was pleased to see the two goals scored and the determination to put bodies on the line to not concede again.

“You’ve got to give Rotherham credit. They stopped us from playing and made it difficult for us and then got the goal. We had to be better in the final third and get bodies into the box.

“We had to be more dynamic in and around the 18-yard box and we were. They kept at it and we got the rewards in the end.”

The game turned with the introduction of on-loan sub Ennis, who caused the Millers’ rearguard all sorts of problems and had a big hand in both goals.

Moore was quick to praise the Wolves youngster and added: “Niall had a great impact in the game and he gave us an out and gave them something else to think about. He caused them some problems and he was excellent.”
