Arsenal want Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to sign a new deal but fear a bumper long-term contract could leave them in a similar predicament to the one they face with Mesut Ozil.

Arsenal are confident they can convince Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to extend his stay at Emirates Stadium but are wary of forking out on the ageing forward.

Aubameyang has become one of the first names on the Arsenal teamsheet since joining for £56million in January 2018.

The Gabon international has scored 44 goals in 69 appearances for the Gunners, making him the side’s most prolific frontman.

His initial contract tied him to the club until June 2021 but reports over the summer suggested he was close to signing an extension.

Football.London claim Arsenal are confident Aubameyang, and his strike partner Alexandre Lacazette, will eventually agree new terms but there is still some negotiating to be done.

Aubameyang is said to have settled into life in north London and can foresee a long future with the club.

Arsenal value the player highly and the former Borussia Dortmund attacker has proved his adaptability under Emery by switching from centre-forward to the flank without his goal tally taking a hit.

Aubameyang did turn 30 in the summer, though, and there are reservations about his longevity.

Much of his effectiveness relies on pace which will naturally fade in the coming years, making the prospect of a long-term contract offer a gamble for Arsenal.

In January 2018, Arsene Wenger tied down then-talisman Mesut Ozil on a bumper three-and-a-half-year deal worth £350,000 a week.

The German fell out of favour with Emery last season, however, and is now earning a fortune as a bench player.

With no playing time to justify a hefty price tag for the German and no other clubs willing to match his wage, Arsenal are stuck with the playmaker.

They do not want to make the same mistake with Aubameyang and head of football Raul Sanllehi and chief contract negotiator Huss Fahmy face a tough task deciding how to approach talks with the striker.
