The Frenchman’s agent, Mino Raiola, spent the summer explaining how the 26-year-old wanted a move away from Old Trafford.

Pogba even admitted he was seeking a “new challenge” as transfer speculation mounted with Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain and Juventus understood to be interested in the midfielder.

However, despite clear interest from La Liga giants Real, no acceptable offers were tabled and, unlike Romelu Lukaku and Alexis Sanchez, Pogba remained a United player.

According to L’Equipe Old Trafford executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward has contacted agent Raiola to discuss a new deal for the World Cup winner.

It comes after £505,000 a-week flop Sanchez was loaned out to Inter while the Serie A outfit also paid £73m for Lukaku.

Despite still paying a huge chunk of Sanchez’s wages, it is understood Old Trafford chiefs want to use their spare cash on a new deal for Pogba.

However, the ex-Juve star’s brother Mathias has blasted United claiming that David De Gea is "the only other great player" at the club.

Mathias previously attempted to aid his younger sibling's bid to leave Old Trafford this summer by publicly calling on Real Madrid to sign him.

And Mathias revealed that his brother is focused on United's season but it remains a challenge because of how under quality the current squad is.

He told Spanish TV programme El Chiringuito: "Paul knows that he cannot leave Manchester United so he’s going to focus on this season.

"It’s not easy right now, because he has a lot of responsibility in the team. A lot of big players have left.

"The only great player is De Gea, the goalkeeper, which means he’s going to have to put a lot of effort in every game."
