Kevin Bond will not quit as Southend boss

Kevin Bond has vowed not to quit as Southend manager despite the Shrimpers’ winless start to the season.

The Shrimpers, who were beaten 3-0 by Rochdale at Roots Hall on Saturday, have now lost their opening six Sky Bet League One matches.

Although he says he will not voluntarily walk away from the club, Bond does accept that the decision may be taken for him.

“I’m not thinking of my position,” Bond stressed.

“I’m thinking of Southend, the result and what we might be able to do it about it.

“I think there’s a bit of a legacy of the recent past and I think there needs to be changes at player level.

“A lot of people have been here for a while and have been through a similar situation last year.

“It’s not what the supporters will want to hear but there’s no way my resolve is any different.

“I will be a fighter and we will find a way to get through it.

“Whether I’m going to be the person to do that, the decision won’t be mine. It will be somebody else’s decision.”

Rochdale opened the scoring with a well-worked goal in the 35th minute, when Jimmy Keohane’s low cross was fired home by Ian Henderson from six yards.

Aaron Morley doubled the advantage two minutes later before Callum Camps converted a left-wing cross from Rhys Norrington-Davies 13 minutes from time.

“I really did think the lads were amazing,” said Rochdale boss Brian Barry-Murphy.

“There’s no point in me playing it down because the effort they put in was amazing and so was the intensity we played at.

“We’ve had a hard run of games, so to come here and play like that is pleasing, but we had to see out some tough periods.

“We had to defend for our lives at times, but once we came into our own we managed to show our personality and influence the game.

“Some of our attacking play was amazing and I have to say hats off to the lads really.

“I asked them at half-time to be aggressive and stay on the front foot and they certainly did that.”

The win pushed Dale up to 10th in the table with nine points from their first six games.
