James Maddison has been backed to join Manchester United by former team-mate Danny Simpson.

The Leicester City playmaker has emerged as an £80m target for the Red Devils, who paid that amount of money to lure Harry Maguire from the King Power Stadium earlier this month.

Simpson played alongside Maddison at Leicester for one season before being released when his contract expired in June.

The former Foxes right-back appeared on Goals on Sunday when presenter and ex-Arsenal Women star Alex Scott asked about the 22-year-old’s rumoured move to Old Trafford.

“I just want to quickly ask you as well because in the papers today Maddison is being linked with Manchester United for around £80m, similar to Harry Maguire,” Scott said.

“Do you see that move happening?”

Simpson replied: “Yeah.

“He, for me, is world class. I think people are speaking right now but honestly I think for an English player as well, honestly he’s world class and he’s only going to get better and better.

“He’s that good, honestly. Honestly, he’s got it all.

“He’s quick in his mind so I think he doesn’t need to have blistering pace running past people because he’s clever and he thinks before everyone else.

“He gets in them little pockets, gets into the right spaces, he’s kind of got eyes in the back of his head.

“The way he receives the ball and turns and puts defenders on the back foot.

“So he doesn’t have to be your typical ‘I’m going to run past you and beat you’ because his qualities are there with his vision and his passing.”

Leicester signed Maddison from Norwich for an initial £20m fee in June 2018.

He scored seven goals in 36 Premier League appearances in his maiden campaign.

Maddison has been tipped to earn a call-up to the England squad for the upcoming international fixtures.
