Michael Duff impressed by Cheltenham display in win over Carlisle

Michael Duff felt his Cheltenham side showed everything he wanted from them in their 2-0 home victory over Carlisle.

Goals in the first half from Gavin Reilly and Luke Varney secured a comfortable win for the Robins, who move up to fifth in the early League Two table after extending their unbeaten home run to 12 games.

“We showed everything that I want from the team tonight,” Duff said.

“We showed quality in the first half and we could have been three or four up.

“We had a penalty turned down and there was a scramble and I don’t know how it’s not gone it.

“We had balls fizzing across the front of their goal and we started the second half like that, with another couple of opportunities and a disallowed goal, which I need to see back, but I thought it was their defender who crashed into the goalie.

“After that players naturally start thinking “we might not get the third now” so they start not being as brave with the press and communication stops because they start looking after themselves a little bit more, but I was really pleased with the way we defended our box after that.”

Carlisle boss Steven Pressley admitted the opening goal in the 15th minute knocked the stuffing out of his side, who have three points from their opening four matches.

“I actually thought the opening 15 to 20 minutes until their goal we’d started the game really well,” Pressley said.

“We were really aggressive and dominant in the opening period and I felt the goal against us spooked us.

“Once we lost the first goal we lost our composure and discipline, along with our belief to play.

“For 15 or 20 minutes of the first half we looked unrecognisable to what we are.

“There were a number of aspects that didn’t help, the back four line was too deep and we needed to push that quicker and be more aggressive on that line.

“We needed to win more first contacts and we needed to believe in the way we play more.

“We did that in the second half and we looked the sort of team I want us to look, fast, attacking and passing, but we can’t give ourselves the mountain to climb as we did today.”
