Lowe hails Plymouth’s fighting spirit

Plymouth boss Ryan Lowe praised his side’s character after they claimed a point in a 2-2 League Two draw against newcomers Salford.

Dom Telford’s 89th minute penalty secured a point for Argyle after Ibou Touray stunned Lowe’s side when he rose at the far post to head home a deep cross 10 minutes from the final whistle.

City had taken a 37th minute lead through target man Jake Beesley before Plymouth playmaker Danny Mayor levelled with a superb 43rd minute strike.

Lowe said: “We will keep going until the end and that shows character because if you can’t get the win you want something from the game – and we got it.

“I would like to think we said we were going to bring entertaining football back here and we are still a long way to go from where we want to get to.

“The way we are and the way we play is exciting and expansive and I want us to be like that.

“You have to score when you are on top and we know that.

“Credit to Salford they have come here with a game plan and stuck to it, and caught us off guard a little if you like.

“Again overall we like to think we should have won the game.

“We had the chances, 27 shots, five on target, 10 blocked and the rest missed but that’s what we are about.

“We looked more like it tonight, it was just that final bit of scoring when we are on top, but that’s how it goes.

“When Danny Mayor is on it like he was tonight he is an exceptional player and I was a great goal but we want that from all the attacking players – taking shots from all angles – and they’ll give us it.

“We’re on track, on course, where we want to be.”

Salford boss Graham Alexander said: “I was pleased with the disciplined performance, the chances we created.

“Obviously it was a killer blow in the last couple of minutes, conceding a penalty. I will have to look back on it to see if it was.

“I am gutted for the players because I thought they were superb.

“We are happy because they are a good team, they have got 11,000 fans here and it will be a difficult place for teams to come.

“I thought we created some really good opportunities and if we had taken them and had a little bit of composure we could have gone one or two in front which would have given us that cushion.

“We had three points in our hands and we have come away with a point. It was a good game of football and both teams stuck to what they wanted to do.

“I thought going into the last couple of minutes, it was about keeping them outside of us and not giving the opportunity away.

“We created some good chances but couldn’t quite get that next goal.

“We are getting to learn about what the division is, we are getting to play different levels of opposition, we have had tough games.”
