Newport extend unbeaten start to season with Walsall stalemate

Newport extended their unbeaten start to the season as they held Walsall to a dull goalless draw at the Banks’s Stadium.
Walsall’s James Hardy created the best chance of an otherwise uninspiring first half after 24 minutes, surging inside from the left to curl narrowly wide from 20 yards.
Newport had threatened just before that but Jamille Matt could only steer a tame effort straight at Saddlers goalkeeper Liam Roberts from Josh Sheehan’s precise pass.
Dan Scarr wasted a great chance for Walsall three minutes into the second half as he thundered a six-yard header over the crossbar from Cameron Norman’s corner.
Matt headed over from similar range for Newport 13 minutes from time after Kyle Howkins rose well to flick on Ryan Haynes’ near-post long throw.
Walsall pressed for a winner late on as Elijah Adebayo did well to work space on the edge of the box, only to blaze his effort over.
Newport have now drawn three of their opening four Sky Bet League Two games, while Walsall are winless since their opening-day victory at Northampton.
