Newport boss Flynn hails Howkins impact

Newport manager Michael Flynn praised the impact of first-half substitute Kyle Howkins after his late header secured a 1-0 victory over Plymouth.

Howkins was called into action in the early stages of the first half after star man Mickey Demetriou was stretchered off the field with what looked like a serious leg injury.

And in what was a tense affair, his 81st-minute goal ensured the Exiles remain unbeaten in Sky Bet League Two this season.

“It was a great header from Kyle,” said Flynn. “We challenged him because he should be scoring a lot more but he put in a really powerful and dominant header.

“It looks like Mickey has broken one of the bones in his leg. He’s gone to hospital for a scan. He’s a big player for us and I just hope he’s not in too much pain.

“We want to have a good start but the league table doesn’t form properly until after about 10 to 12 games. I think we’ve started very well and we could have won all three games.

“The second-half performance was very good. In the first half they dominated possession and looked more dangerous than us. I had to make three unforced changes so it’s a credit to the lads who came in.

“I thought it had 0-0 written all over it but fair play, it was a great header from Kyle.”

Plymouth manager Ryan Lowe believed his side deserved more out of the game.

He said: “We were dominant and the possession stats prove that.

“One lapse in concentration cost us. We’ve said from day one we aren’t anywhere near the finished article. Newport play a different style of football to us and made life tough.

“I’m just disappointed that from all the possession we had we didn’t put the ball in the back of their net. But again they are small details and if you don’t get it right you get punished for them.

“I can’t criticise my lads or my team because they’ve been fantastic. I thought we were outstanding for 80 minutes until they scored.

“I told the boys ‘if you can’t win the game just don’t lose it’ but that one lapse in concentration cost us. It’s three points lost and we need to bounce back quickly.”
