Newport through as Gills pay the penalty

League Two side Newport knocked Gillingham out of the Carabao Cup 4-1 on penalties after a night of spot-kick drama and a 2-2 draw at Priestfield.
Josh Sheehan, Padraig Amond, Mickey Demetriou and Tristan Abrahams all scored from the spot in the shoot-out to give Michael Flynn’s side a dramatic victory in Kent.
Brandon Hanlan opened the scoring with the first of three Gills penalties during the 90 minutes, firing past Nick Townsend from 12 yards after Scot Bennett had clumsily shoved Regan Charles-Cook.
Having himself been fouled by Kyle Howkins in the box, Hanlan then squandered the opportunity to double his side’s advantage when Townsend’s legs kept out his second spot-kick on 56 minutes.
County levelled six minutes from time when Abrahams latched onto the end of Matty Dolan’s free-kick to score his first goal for the Welsh club.
Striker Mikael Ndjoli appeared to have earned manager Steve Evans his first victory in charge of the Gills when he scored a 90th-minute spot-kick after ex-County midfielder Mark Byrne was fouled by Howkins.
However Ndjoli was then dismissed for his second booking following a last-gasp foul on debutant Dan Leadbitter, from which Amond scored from the spot to take the game to a shoot-out.
