Ipswich boss Paul Lambert pleased to start the new season with victory at Burton

Ipswich manager Paul Lambert was happy to see his team get off to a winning start as they beat Burton 1-0 in Town’s first game in the third tier in over 60 years.

It took just 11 minutes of the new season for relegated Ipswich to open the scoring as Danny Rowe fed the ball to Everton loanee Luke Garbutt and his effort deflected off John-Joe O’Toole and landed in the bottom corner.

Lambert was pleased with what he saw. He said: “I thought we started very well. It’s a really tough place to come, this.

“Nigel (Clough) and his team had a good cup run last season so it was a strong team to play against. First day of the season, it doesn’t matter if you’ve just come down, it can go any way. I’m happy.

“It looked lively. As I said there was a lot of good things in there.

“James Wilson has hardly trained in pre-season but he’s come in and did really well for us despite hardly playing in pre-season at all. Fatigue was always going to happen. James went off with cramp, he hasn’t done much but he did really well for us today.

“I thought (Luke) Woolfenden did really well too. I don’t think there was one weak area in the team.”

Burton manager Nigel Clough was left wondering what his team did wrong in the game.

He said: “We didn’t do a lot wrong today. One piece of outrageous bad luck and fortune for them and that’s the difference between the two teams. There wasn’t an awful lot in it apart from that.

“It’s something you can do nothing about. Our performance was probably good enough to beat a lot of teams in this division.

“I think it would be fair to say the run of the ball didn’t go our way. A header cleared off the line in the last few minutes, a few chances in the first half.

“There wasn’t many chances created today – two very good teams going at it.

“We’re very pleased with our performance and we should have come away with at least a point.

“They’re a very good team and one of the favourites for promotion. They’re a good team and a big club who are looking to get back into the Championship.

“They’ve got some good, experienced players. Their captain (Cole) Skuse was as good as anyone on the pitch today.”
