Grimsby boss Michael Jolley talks up Elliott Whitehouse

Grimsby manager Michael Jolley praised midfielder Elliott Whitehouse after a goalscoring debut for the club in the 2-0 win at Morecambe.

Whitehouse signed for Grimsby last season but missed the whole campaign with a knee injury and his 64th-minute opener was a special moment for the former Lincoln player.

Jolley, who saw Max Wright net a late second, said: “Elliott was someone who I put a lot of effort into bringing to the club last summer because I really believe in him as a player and when he got the injury we were all devastated for him.

“It was great to see him back in the team and I was so pleased that he got the goal in his first game for us after 12 months.

“To see him back in the team and showing how good he is already is a big plus for us.

“It was one of those games where whoever got the first goal would have a huge advantage so I was delighted it was us and even more pleased that it was Elliott who scored it.

“The first game of the season is always a bit frenetic but we limited them to only one chance of note so I’m very pleased with the result and it’s a good first step forward for us.

“We have worked hard in the summer with the squad and have a bigger squad than last year and we have options now so there were a lot of good signs for us.”

Morecambe manager Jim Bentley said his side failed to hit some of the heights they showed in pre-season.

He said: “It wasn’t an ideal start for us, I have to admit.

“We didn’t pass it well enough to be fair but the game looked like it would be 0-0 until their goal which came from a free-kick tactic that we have used really well for a lot of years but we didn’t get right today and I will take the blame for that.

“We didn’t get the line right and they had players queuing up to score in the end.

“That was a real blow because the goal seemed to hit us hard and our play became a bit frantic.

“We huffed and puffed but didn’t really put them under enough pressure and as we pushed people forward they were able to add a second.”
