HARRY MAGUIRE is finally on his way to Manchester United after the clubs finally agreed a fee with Leicester.

The long-running transfer story of the summer is finally nearing its end after the clubs finally shook hands on a deal.

Maguire was left out of the Leicester squad for their clash with Atalanta on Friday night.

That’s after Brendan Rodgers decided that the player was not in the right frame of mind to continue preparations for the new season with Leicester, for the time being at least.

And Express Sport understands United have agreed a basic deal worth £80million with Leicester.

It will be a world-record fee for a defender, surpassing the £75m Liverpool paid for Virgil van Dijk in January 2018.

Manchester United have been tentative to reach Leicester’s valuation for the player all summer, fearing overpaying for the 26-year-old.

Their opening offer of £70m was turned away and King Power Stadium chiefs demanded in excess of £90m.

They have now settled for slightly less, after Maguire continued to make his intentions of leaving the club clear.

United first became interested in Maguire after the World Cup when Jose Mourinho was their manager.

Ed Woodward was reluctant to pay the £50m price tag being quoted amid fears of inflation on the back of a good international tournament.

One year later, the executive vice-chairman is willing to put his hands in his pockets to get the deal completed in time for the new Premier League season.

Manchester City had expressed an interest in the former Hull man but did not table any kind of formal offer.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been looking to sign Maguire all summer and is planning to mould his new-look defence around him.

The England international has idolised the likes of Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic while growing up watching the Premier League.

Now he will look to emulate two of his heroes when he walks out at Old Trafford.

United kick off their new season next Sunday at home to Chelsea on August 11, which could be Maguire’s first game in new colours.

Personal terms are yet to be agreed but a medical is being scheduled for Saturday.
