Manchester United have been linked with a move for Leicester star Maguire all summer long, with the England international earmarked as the club's priority transfer target for the summer.

The Red Devils wanted the 26-year-old signed a year ago, only for Woodward to tell Jose Mourinho that the player would cost too much.

A year on, and Manchester United are trying to bring Maguire in after a nightmare Premier League campaign that saw them concede 54 goals and finish sixth, behind Manchester City, Liverpool, Chelsea, Tottenham and Arsenal.

And Sky Sports claim United boss Solskjaer has told Woodward he wants Maguire signed as quickly as possible.

United beat Tottenham 2-1 today with goals from Anthony Martial and Angel Gomes giving the Red Devils a fourth pre-season win on the trot.

However, the Red Devils saw Eric Bailly hobble off.

In the wake of the injury to the Ivory Coast international, Solskjaer has reportedly told Woodward that he deems Maguire as a vital signing.

The club have already had two bids for the defender knocked back by Leicester, who are adamant he's going nowhere.

But Solskjaer's personal intervention could yet see United land the defender they crave the most.

Leicester boss Brendan Rodgers recently hailed Maguire for his professionalism amid links to United.

"The clubs that have spoken to Leicester have not met any valuation that the club has put on him, so at this moment in time he's very much a Leicester player, and you can see where his concentration is, and it's very much here.

"I'm quite relaxed. It's all 'what if?' At this moment in time there's nothing there that is going to tempt the club at all. The club don't need to sell, the club don't want to sell.

"Harry is working with a group of fantastic players and is at a great club, and like I say times have changed in football, where at times with other clubs you would have had to sell a player, but it's not the case.

"He's a player that is training, working. What I would say is he's been the ultimate professional.

"It's actually been a joy to work with him, because I've been in this situation with a number of players, but his concentration is fully on Leicester.”

Former United star Daniel Nardiello, meanwhile, has backed the club's pursuit of Maguire, insisting he can thrive alongside Victor Lindelof at the back.

"I think they’ll add quality to the team,” ex-United striker Daniel Nardiello told Love Sport Radio.

"Especially [Harry] Maguire. I think he’s the one they needed. Him alongside [Victor] Lindelof would be a great partnership.

"I think he’d bring the ball out from the back, get them playing out from the back. Even though it’s a hefty fee, I think United have got to bite the bullet, pay the fee and get him in.”
