Man Utd could use Phil Jones as a makeweight in a deal for Harry Maguire
MANCHESTER UNITED could use Phil Jones as a potential makeweight in an £80million deal for Leicester centre-back Harry Maguire, according to reports.
Red Devils boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has said he will have to sell one of his defenders once he finally lands the Foxes star.
And the Telegraph report that Jones, 27, could be the one to go with Solskjaer keen on including him in a deal for Maguire, 26.
The centre-back only penned a new four-and-a-half contract with the Red Devils in February.
United took six central defenders for their pre-season tour of Asia and Australia.
But only Victor Lindelof - who was one of the few shining lights at Old Trafford last season - can be confident of keeping his place in the squad.
The Swede has been linked with a move to Barcelona, but he has confirmed he is determined to stay in Manchester.
However, the futures of Marcos Rojo, Eric Bailly, Chris Smalling, Axel Tuanzebe and Jones are uncertain.
Solskjaer admitted that, amid his pursuit of Maguire, he would have to trim his current squad once new signings are made.
He said: "Of course, there’s a limit of players. Whoever performs will be part of the team and whoever doesn’t has a fight to get back in.
"There’s been loads of speculation but I can’t really say anything. We’ll work to find a relationship with the ones we’ve got.
"[Another loan for Tuanzebe?] He has a great chance of staying here and playing. He had a great season last year.
"He’s really proven he can play at that level and he’s come back strong and focused.
"He did well in the first game here (against Perth Glory) and he’s one of the exciting players I can’t wait to see more of."
