MANCHESTER UNITED have submitted a transfer bid for Sporting Lisbon star Bruno Fernandes as they aim to beat Tottenham to the player’s signature, according to reports in Portugal.

Manchester United and Tottenham have both been linked with a move for Fernandes, who has impressed for Sporting Lisbon this season.

The Portugal international has been in stunning form for his club, scoring 31 goals across all competitions while also helping his nation reach the final of the Nations League.

Manchester United need to sign at least two midfielders to compensate for the departures of Marouane Fellaini and Ander Herrera in recent times.

And, now, Portuguese outlet Jornal de Noticias claim that United have made an offer for the midfielder.

It’s said that they are willing to pay £48million and £19m in bonuses - but Tottenham are prepared to to pay £58m to get a deal done.

The problem for Spurs, though, is that they would need to jettison Christian Eriksen in order to secure Fernandes' arrival.

Eriksen, who has also been linked with a move to United, rocked Spurs last week by saying he is interested in pursuing a new challenge elsewhere.

“I feel that I am in a place in my career, where I might want to try something new,” he said.

“I have the wildest and deepest respect for everything that has happened in Tottenham. But I have also said that I would like to try something new.

“I hope there will be a clarification during the summer. That's the plan. It can happen anytime.

“Everyone wants it best if it happens as soon as possible, but in football things take time.”

Jornal de Noticias say that cash-rich United can accelerate a deal quickly given Tottenham’s need to sell Eriksen.

But what happens next remains to be seen.

Fernandes himself was recently asked about his future and said: "I'm with Sporting.

"There is a lot of talk, there are sure to be clubs interested but to this day, my focus has always been placed on Sporting.

"Now I want to rest because I have a lot to give to the national team.

"I've spent two intense years, I don't know if I will spend a third year, I don't know if I'm going to leave. No one knows the future.

"I gave my best - blood, sweat and tears for this club - and will continue to do so whenever I wear this jersey."
