MARCUS RASHFORD will assess Manchester United intent on rejoining football’s elite before signing his new contract.

United want the England striker, 21, to commit beyond the next two seasons, after which he can move for just training compensation.

But it is understood Rashford wants to be sure the club are heading in the right direction after dropping out of the Premier League top four.

Rashford has played in the Champions League in the last two seasons but will back in the Europa League - the competition he made his explosive debut in three years ago - following United’s end-of-season slump.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will start the rebuilding process this summer and the United boss is looking at exciting young players rather than the marquee signings of the post-Alex Ferguson era.

"Next season we need to get back to how Manchester United play, for me that's most important,” Rashford wrote this week on social media. “We need to find that willingness and respond the right way."

United risk getting into the same situation with Rashford as they have with David De Gea.

The Spanish keeper has run down his contract and with one full season left Paris Saint-Germain will pile the pressure on United to sell with a summer bid.

De Gea was edging towards committing his future to United midway through the season - but have failed to agree fresh terms and now risk losing him.

Rashford’s contract expires at the end of next season but the club have an option to extend that by a year, which they will trigger if they cannot agree on a new deal.
