Ivan Toney scored twice as Peterborough beat Portsmouth 3-2 to end the hosts’ dream of automatic promotion and keep alive their own play-off hopes.
Toney’s 75th-minute winner settled a thrilling game in Posh’s favour after Pompey had fought back from 2-0 down to level.
Pompey dominated the early exchanges, only for Lee Tomlin to give Peterborough the lead against the run of play in the 13th minute.
Marcus Maddison led a rapid counter-attack before pulling back a cross for Tomlin to sweep in his first goal since January.
Toney doubled the visitors’ advantage with a bullet header from a Maddison corner 14 minutes later to leave Fratton Park in stunned silence.
Ben Close gave Portsmouth hope seven minutes before half-time with a deflected long-range shot which left Posh goalkeeper Aaron Chapman wrong-footed.
The hosts were level 14 minutes after half-time as defender Christian Burgess converted from close range after Peterborough failed to deal with Lee Brown’s free-kick.
But an action-packed game swung back in Peterborough’s favour when Toney rifled home from the corner of the penalty area.
