McPhillips praises Blackpool fans after first home victory since their boycott ended

Terry McPhillips paid tribute to the Blackpool fans as Nathan Delfouneso’s added-time winner secured a 2-1 derby win over Fleetwood.

The striker fired home deep into added time to give the Seasiders their first home win in their last six matches and their first since fans ended their boycott after owner Owen Oyston departed the club.

Ched Evans hit a 37th minute equaliser to cancel out Jay Spearing’s penalty for Blackpool six minutes earlier, with McPhillips knowing exactly who to credit the win to.

“It is a great time to finally get the win in front of a big crowd. The crowd were superb and the lads gave back to them,” he said.

“I thought we played the pitch better. We showed our bottle again and refused to accept a draw.

“We kept going forward and had that drive to get the win.

“I cannot fault the players’ desire or efforts, I thought they were magnificent.

“We were queuing up at the end to get the winner. The pressure paid off for us in the end and it was a great way to win it and a massive lift.

“It is the first win since the fans have come back and we are all buzzing.

“I am really pleased for the fans above all, they have been fantastic and they deserve this. It has been an emotional game and we are all on a high now.”

The visitors started the better with Wes Burns and Evans going close inside the first five minutes.

But they fell behind when Spearing scored from the penalty spot after Nya Kirby was tripped by James Husband.

Evans headed home at the back post to level before Christoffer Mafoumbi pulled off a superb save to keep out Fleetwood’s Paddy Madden on 51 minutes.

But the game turned in the second half as Nathan Sherron was sent off for a foul on Matty Virtue, a dismissal that proved crucial as Delfouneso fired home at the death.

“It is disappointing to lose the game like that. We just cannot keep making mistakes like we are doing,” said Fleetwood manager Joey Barton.

“I think the lad has given the ref a decision to make and he has gone with Blackpool for the penalty.

“I will have to watch the red card back – it looked a fair challenge but you cannot make tackles like that in football now, those days are gone.

“We dealt with them well all afternoon and were alert to the second balls.

“It is frustrating to get nothing from the game, the lads gave everything and did well to get back into it.

“There is no doubt we were the better side, but we’ve lost and that is football.

“Football is a game of fine margins and Blackpool took care of theirs which is why they won.”
