John McGreal: Colchester draw at Yeovil was missed opportunity

Colchester manager John McGreal felt it was an opportunity missed at Yeovil despite being down to 10 men and coming from a goal behind to draw 1-1 in League Two.

Jake Gray gave Yeovil the lead after 53 minutes at Huish Park before U’s goalkeeper Dillon Barnes was sent off during the celebrations for an alleged kick on Tristan Abrahams.

Yet Colchester regrouped and Tom Eastman volleyed in a 75th-minute equaliser from a corner.

“It was two edgy teams (in the) first half – one top end of the table, one bottom end of the table – knowing a win was really important,” McGreal said.

“We had the better opportunities I thought in a really cagey first half.

“I thought, second half we were right on it. We started really well and they sat off us so we were able to dominate the ball really well.

“To sum it up, it’s a missed opportunity definitely. But it wasn’t to be. What we’ve done is we’ve scrapped and we’ve fought and we were able to get a point.”

McGreal felt Barnes should have done better with the goal, but did not see the incident that lead to his red card.

“I can’t comment because I haven’t seen it. All I can comment on is, obviously it’s a mistake. But from what I was told, I don’t think you can do that,” he continued.

“Then we changed the shape, made a couple of subs and got on it again knowing the importance of a goal – and we’ve got the goal.

“It was a little bit of to and fro and they were leaving themselves one-on-one at the back so it was obviously entertaining as a spectacle.”

Glovers caretaker boss Neale Marmon also did not see what Barnes did, but was proud of his players despite them missing the chance to claim maximum points and move out of the relegation zone.

“Tristan was celebrating – obviously as we haven’t scored a goal for a long time – and he just ran past him. I haven’t actually seen it I just saw him on the deck,” Marmon said.

“After the red card we lost our rhythm a bit. I said to the boys just now, we should have just kept going forward. We needed a second goal.

“We did still have a lot of half chances after our goal but we didn’t really have a forceful one in the end.

“We still looked a bit nervy.

“It’s obvious when you’re down the bottom it’s not easy. But I saw a different character today. I thought it started last week a little bit and I was proud of them today. I thought they did well.

“From the first to the last minute, we gave everything. I think there’s a lot of hope now.”
