Marcus Maddison keeps Peterborough in play-off hunt

Peterborough remain firmly in the hunt for the League One play-offs after a hard-fought 1-0 win against fellow hopefuls Blackpool.

Marcus Maddison’s strike just before half-time at Bloomfield Road ensured a third successive win for Darren Ferguson’s men and keeps their promotion hopes alive.

Armand Gnanduillet met Liam Feeney’s cross after six minutes but nodded wide under pressure from Aaron Chapman.

Posh top scorer Ivan Toney nearly capitalised on Curtis Tilt’s poor pass and his low drive on the quarter-hour flew inches over.

Feeney’s low header from Nya Kirby’s corner went over the bar before the half-hour, but Toney nearly handed Peterborough the lead nine minutes from the break after his volley rattled off Christoffer Mafoumbi’s bar.

Lee Tomlin blasted off target as half-time loomed, but the Cardiff loanee then slipped in Maddison who rifled in to give the visitors the advantage.

Rhys Bennett and Jason Naismith made key interceptions from Kirby and Gnanduillet respectively as the Seasiders sought an equaliser after the break.

Maddison raced onto Toney’s ball with seven minutes left but blasted into the stands and Matty Virtue’s effort before full-time could only find Chapman.

Substitute Donervon Daniels had Mafoumbi to thank after his poor back pass let Toney in, the goalkeeper also denying Maddison in the closing stages.
