Sol Campbell reflects on a ‘difficult’ week for Macclesfield

Sol Campbell was disappointed his Macclesfield players could not secure victory at home to Morecambe, despite off-field issues dominating the build-up to the game.

The Silkmen squad had been on the verge of strike action over unpaid wages, although Campbell did not feel that had too much of a bearing on the game.

“We’ll take the point, Morecambe are a solid team,” Campbell said. “Every game now has to be played like it’s our last game.

“This week has been really difficult with lots of stuff going on, but we’ve got a point and as a team we have to look deep into ourselves and pull something out on Tuesday.

“For us as a team we have to separate issues and playing football.

“As a manager it’s hard for me because there are a lot of factors involved. I understand the unrest the wages issue causes, it’s hard for me as well.”

The Shrimps edged closer to sealing their League Two status for next year while the Silkmen remain bottom after failing to make the most of their relegation rivals drawing.

Zak Mills headed home the opening goal for Morecambe but Elliott Durrell drilled in the equaliser for Macclesfield.

“It was a tough game, it was important for us not to lose,” said Morecambe boss Jim Bentley. “It’s a point gained and any point away from home is very welcome, so there’s still work to be done with the games running out.

“We started superbly and took the sting out of the crowd. It’s always important not to let the home team get up a head of steam or fly out of the traps.

“Macclesfield are a very decent, very capable side and it was important we started well to dampen the crowd. I thought we were superb in the first half.

“We were worthy of our lead, but when we were on top we got a little bit casual and let ourselves down for their goal.

“There wasn’t much in it in the second half – they were on top for a lot of it but we had a good opportunity late on and had one legitimate goal disallowed for offside.”
