Peterborough boss Ferguson praises Maddison and Dembele

Wingers Marcus Maddison and Siriki Dembele earned manager Darren Ferguson’s praise after the pair helped to secure a 2-0 home win for Peterborough against mid-table Gillingham.

Maddison converted a second-half penalty – won by Dembele – before setting up Matt Godden to seal Posh’s first back-to-back wins since October to keep the pressure on sixth-placed Doncaster Rovers.

Ferguson said: “Dembele is a good player. He is a fit boy but he needs a lot of coaching – when to pass, when to run, defensive issues. But I like him, he’s an exciting player.

“Him and Marcus on either wing, you have two very good players at this level.

“I thought Rhys (Bennett) and Taff (Ryan Tafazolli) were outstanding (in defence). They never missed a header and were up against a very good player in (Tom) Eaves.

“Those two handled him well and I was delighted with them.

“It wasn’t a great spectacle. First-half in particular, I thought we were way off it. Second-half we were way better. The substitutions did well.

“It’s back-to-back wins for the first time in a long time which will give us confidence. We need to keep as much pressure on Doncaster as we can. For me, we have to win every home game left.”

Maddison’s penalty after 57 minutes saw him send goalkeeper Tomas Holy the wrong way.

It was his 50th goal for Posh and his fifth in his last six matches.

The spot-kick was awarded after Dembele was adjudged to have been pulled back by Max Ehmer.

In a match of few chances Godden sealed the win after 85 minutes, flicking the ball onto Maddison who squared it back to the striker to score from close range.

The defeat was Gillingham’s first in four matches, and boss Steve Lovell said: “We could have been out there until 12 o’clock and not scored.

“There was not much between the teams. We performed well without really causing too many problems.

“We had a lot of opportunities where we could done have something. It’s just disappointing with the result. There was nothing in the game until the penalty. It looked like it might be nil-nil.

“The boys have given everything but the penalty did turn the game. We changed it and tried to get the equaliser and that’s when their best spell came.

“The first-half, we had a lot of balls into the area where perhaps we could have done better.

“Peterborough handled Tom and Brandon (Hanlan) very well. Sometimes you have to give the opposition credit for how they defend.

“If we keep performing like we have been we will (stay up), but there’s a lot of work to be done.”
