Michael Jolley: Grimsby weren’t good enough

Michael Jolley admits Grimsby did not do enough to salvage anything from their 2-0 defeat against Stevenage.
Kurtis Guthrie scored twice at Blundell Park as the visitors earned their first victory in four Sky Bet League Two games, while the Mariners are without a win in eight.
Jolley said: “I don’t think we did enough in the second half to warrant a result from the game.
“I thought we were the better team in the first half and had we got the energy from getting the first goal it would have provided us with the impetus to go on and get something.
“Certainly in the second half, we came up short.
“It’s a frustrating time because, clearly, we are in a business where goals and results give you energy and take you forward through the difficult moments in games and through those difficult games.
“When you go through that period where you don’t have the release of a win or scoring a sufficient number of goals, it can affect your confidence.
“When they scored that first goal we came in saying that we had played reasonably well, but we were still behind.”
Stevenage manager Dino Maamria said: “The most important thing is the clean sheet and three points, because we needed that.
“We changed it slightly this week and played a lot more football. We know we have to do better with the ball and I thought we were brilliant from start to finish.
“The first goal I thought was a typical team goal. We started on the edge of our box and countered them and it was a great finish from Kurtis.
“That’s what we’re capable of when we’re on it. We spoke all week about getting ready physically and I thought we worked very hard.
“We played the game that we played earlier in the season when we were averaging two points per game.
“This week we’ve looked back on those months and all the stats to see what we’ve been doing well. We went away from that a little bit, but we were back to it.”
