Ayr dropped two points as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Morton at Somerset Park on Tuesday night.
Ladbrokes Championship top scorer Lawrence Shankland broke the deadlock midway through the first half with his 22nd league goal this season for the home side.
The former Morton loanee slotted the ball into the bottom-left corner from the penalty spot, sending goalkeeper Robby McCrorie the wrong way after Lee Kilday brought down Andy Murdoch in the box.
Gary Oliver – making his 100th appearance for the visitors – found the side-netting early on for Morton and had a penalty appeal dismissed eight minutes after the break as they searched for an equaliser.
They came close on the hour mark but defender Reghan Tumilty fired over the crossbar but their efforts finally paid off as Greg Kiltie tapped home Gregor Buchanan’s assist from close range with 20 minutes remaining.
