Hanson gives AFC Wimbledon hope

James Hanson’s first-half double gave AFC Wimbledon’s League One survival hopes a further shot in the arm as they won 2-1 at relegation rivals Scunthorpe.

The dominant Dons could even afford the luxury of an early penalty miss as they extended their unbeaten run on the road to five games.

Wimbledon’s opportunity from the spot came in the 11th minute, when Steve Seddon was bundled to the floor in the box by keeper Jak Alnwick. Joe Pigott got plenty behind the ball at the resulting penalty, but Alnwick was equal to it.

The miss was quickly forgotten midway through the opening 45 minutes, when Anthony Wordsworth swung in a free-kick from the right and Hanson applied the faintest of touches to glance home a header.

His and Wimbledon’s second goal of the afternoon was much more emphatic, the striker smashing a shot into the bottom corner from just inside the area six minutes after his opener.

Scunthorpe, playing for the first time since sacking manager Stuart McCall a week earlier, offered little in response until the final quarter.

Top scorer Lee Novak did get them back in the game with 11 minutes to go, finishing from close range after the Dons’ Aaron Ramsdale had been unable to hold on to an earlier effort, but it proved no more than a consolation.
