THE most important piece of business Manchester United should do this summer is keep hold of David De Gea.

This could depend on them finishing in the Premier League top four and securing Champions League qualification.

Why would the best goalkeeper in the world want to stay at a club that isn’t competing in the biggest competition?

He needs a new contract. He needs to be paid what he is worth.

And if Manchester United think Alexis Sanchez is worth £500,000-a-week then what in heaven’s sake is De Gea going to cost?

Talks continue but the Spaniard holds all the aces. He owes United nothing and club bosses are in his debt because he’s been consistently brilliant.

But while United fans love De Gea, him signing a new deal would still not be as exciting as seeing a new superstar walk through the doors at Old Trafford.

United fans are arrogant enough to believe De Gea won’t leave anyway.

Whatever happens with the keeper, United do need a world class midfielder to ease the burden on Paul Pogba.

United have to target Barcelona’s Ivan Rakitic.

The Croatian has done it all - and done it all with class.

He’s won league titles, the Champions League and played in a World Cup final. He’s won more than 100 international caps.

At his best, Rakitic can run and control a game from midfield on his own.

He makes the difficult look simple, has a wonderful range of passing and can unlock the tightest of defences.

Persuading Barca to sell him will be quite a challenge. But it is one United’s executive vice chairman Ed Woodward has to overcome.

If United want to be challenging for the league title next season then this is the class of player they need to be looking at.
