Tranmere assistant Mike Jackson remaining grounded in promotion race

Tranmere assistant boss Mike Jackson is urging Rovers not to get carried away after they beat Grimsby 4-1 to register a fifth win in a row.

The victory means Micky Mellon’s side have moved to within four points of the top three – having been well adrift of the play-offs just a few weeks ago.

That run of form has left supporters dreaming of a second successive promotion, but Jackson is keen to ensure everyone remains focused.

“I don’t really look at the table,” he said. “I always think if you’re winning games, you’ll be up near the top of it. You can get too drawn into it.

“The next game is the most important for us now. We get ready for Oldham on Saturday.

“We’ve just got to focus on what we’re doing, keep going, keep the crowd with us, keep the place bubbling, keep the players ready and enjoy it all.”

Rovers took the lead thanks to an early strike from Connor Jennings, who converted from a clever pass by Ollie Banks.

Grimsby equalised through Martyn Woolford’s rebound after Wes Thomas saw his penalty saved, but Tranmere were in front again moments later when Manny Monthe netted from close range.

James Norwood then bagged his 27th of the season, lobbing the goalkeeper with a cheeky effort from inside the box, before Jennings grabbed his second, all before half-time.

“It’s a great result,” Jackson continued. “Obviously the conditions weren’t great with the wind and that.

“It wasn’t pretty on the eye but we’ve taken our chances.

“In the second half, we’ve seen out a spell where they put us under a bit of pressure. We came through that and then the game just died away.

“But we managed it really well and we’re delighted with them.”

Grimsby manager Michael Jolley meanwhile thought his side were unlucky not to get something from the game.

The visitors had dominated before the opener, but 15 minutes of chaos before the break cost them any chance of taking any points back to Blundell Park.

“It’s hard to accept the result,” he said. “I think we started the better of the two teams and we had two clear chances to score before the first goal.

“In the second half, when we were in a difficult situation, I saw a really positive reaction from the boys. They kept going and kept a clean sheet in the second half.

“Clearly, there was a period just before half-time when we didn’t deal with the ball coming into our box.

“It’s a wild night, the wind’s swirling and the pitch isn’t easy, but they’re not excuses, we have to do better with our defending.

“But we need to stay calm. Their goalkeeper won man of the match, we had a number of good chances and had we converted them, we might have been able to get back into the game.”
