RIO FERDINAND and Kate Wright hit the gym early this morning - but the Manchester United legend came a cropper on the box jumps.

The former England defender, 40, took to Instagram to show followers their 6am workout routine.

Ferdinand and Wright hit the box jumps bright and early this morning.

Rio pushed himself with the 90cm box while Kate understandably opted for a shorter height.

But it was the former Three Lions star that buckled first, just failing to get his feet on to the top of the box.

He wrote on the post: "6am workout done.....doesn't always go as planned this workout stuff!! #YouOkBabe #couplegoals #gymlife #ShinsOnFire @xkatiewright"

The couple started dating early in 2017 and got engaged in Dubai last November.

They regularly upload videos training together at Ferdinand's home gym as the retired star looks to keep up his fitness levels, while the couple will no doubt want to be in peak condition come their wedding day.

BT Sport pundit Ferdinand would have been desperate to start the morning by putting yesterday's events behind him.

His former side were beaten 2-0 at Arsenal as the race for the top four took yet another twist.

But the game was overshadowed by a fan who ran on to the pitch and shoved Chris Smalling as he celebrated Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang's penalty.

Defender Smalling - who was a team-mate of Ferdinand's for four years - took to Twitter to respond this morning.

He said: "Commenting would only add to the attention he craved...

"Disappointed with yesterday's result but we'll learn from it. Looking ahead. Have a good start to the week everyone!"
