Colchester moved back into the League Two play-off places with a comprehensive 3-0 home victory over Newport.
Colchester’s Tom Eastman went close with a downward header before the U’s took a 20th-minute lead through Sammie Szmodics, who prodded home after Ryan Jackson had helped on Frank Nouble’s lofted pass in the area.
Newport goalkeeper Joe Day denied Courtney Senior, after the Colchester attacker had been sent away by Szmodics’ through pass.
But the hosts doubled their lead in first-half stoppage-time through Senior, who unleashed a superb 25-yard shot past Day.
Day foiled Senior twice early in the second half and – although Colchester goal keeper Rene Gilmartin clawed away Joss Labadie’s close-range header – the hosts were on top.
Nouble made it 3-0 in the 63rd minute with a magnificent solo effort which saw him bamboozle Newport left-back Dan Butler in the area, before curling a superb shot into the far corner of the net.
Senior twice went close again before the end as Colchester claimed a convincing victory.
