Paul Scholes disappointed after Oldham concede late again to draw with Stevenage

Oldham manager Paul Scholes admitted his team’s late lapses were costing them too many points after Latics drew 1-1 at home to Stevenage.

The visitors grabbed an equaliser at the death, making it the fourth consecutive game in which Oldham have conceded in the 90th minute or beyond.

Scholes began his managerial career with a victory last month but his side have since taken two points from a possible 12.

They were denied victory when Stevenage’s Kurtis Guthrie headed in an Ilias Chair corner – and Boro almost won it in injury time as Chair’s free-kick hit the woodwork.

Earlier, Jose Baxter’s fine strike from 25 yards had given Oldham a 47th-minute lead.

But Scholes said: “We’ve been conceding late goals and it’s disappointing because we could be sitting here with a lot more points.

“It’s OK for me to say we have good players and a team who are capable of winning games but we need to go out and prove it.

“If we keep playing as we did today I know we will win plenty of games but we have to cut out those silly mistakes.

“The fans really got behind us after we went in front, but people started getting nervous towards the end because of the goals we’ve been conceding.

“I’m really disappointed with the result, although I’m not disappointed with the way we played overall because we were excellent.

“No games are easy in this league and we didn’t take advantage of a game we dominated, but I knew before I came here that the squad is talented and is capable of beating anyone.”

Despite earning a last-gasp equaliser, Stevenage boss Dino Maamria kept his players in the dressing room for an hour.

Maamria said: “It was two performances in one. In the first half we were outstanding but in the second we were very poor.

“We came in 0-0 at half-time and felt very positive because we could have scored two or three goals, but the home side usually starts the second half on the front foot and we reminded the players what would happen.

“Oldham scored within a couple of minutes and goals always change the momentum of a game. It gave them a big lift and we didn’t really get into the second half.

“To be fair to the players, they showed character to come back and we even could have won with the free-kick against the bar, although we wouldn’t have deserved it overall.

“At this stage of the season the teams with the most belief will be the ones who go out and grab it, so I need to make sure we have that belief.”
