Fulham sacked Ranieri yesterday after a dismal spell at Craven Cottage.
Ranieri only got the job in November, but a run of just three wins in 18 games has seen him lose his job.
Defeat at Southampton last night leaves Fulham 10 points adrift of safety and looking set for an immediate return to the Championship.
And Kilmarnock boss Clarke could be the man they chose to get them back in the big time next season.
The Scottish Daily Star exclusively report Clarke is a frontrunner for the position, which is being filled by Scott Parker currently on a caretaker basis.
Clarke was a target for the Cottagers back in 2015 but decided to remain at rivals Reading.
Fulham have since been bought over but there remain influential figures at Craven Cottage who are big fans of Clarke.
The 55-year-old has a wealth of experience having been first-team coach at Chelsea, Newcastle, West Ham and Liverpool and has managed in his own right at West Brom, Reading and as caretaker of Aston Villa.

He has added to his glowing reputation by transforming Killie from bottom of the table strugglers to European contenders over the past two seasons.
Clarke has also made headlines with his fearless barbs at referees and fellow clubs and recently was the subject of sectarian abuse from Rangers fans.
He also revealed he had knocked back an approach from Rangers to become their new manager following Pedro Caixinha’s sacking.

If the chance arises to return to England – where his family still live – with a club like Fulham then it is likely to be too big a lure to turn down.
Killie are reluctant to lose Clarke but would be well compensated because their boss recently signed a new contract.
Fulham play away at London rivals Chelsea on Sunday, with Parker set for his first match in charge.
Kilmarnock are at home to Motherwell in the Scottish Premiership on Saturday afternoon.
