Scholes: Oldham must be more streetwise

Oldham boss Paul Scholes called on his players to wise up to the demands of League Two after suffering his first managerial defeat in a 2-1 home loss against Morecambe.

Scholes had kicked off his Boundary Park career with four points from a possible six but Oldham were left stunned as the struggling visitors grabbed a stoppage-time winner through Aaron Collins.

Morecambe struck in the fourth minute when Jordan Cranston converted Piero Mingoia’s cross and though Oldham’s Jose Baxter headed home on 76 minutes, Collins had the final say.

Scholes said: “Conceding the early goal wasn’t ideal and they made it difficult for us. They’re a streetwise side and we have to grow up on the pitch to become more streetwise ourselves.

“They were just very good at what they did. They wasted time and were first to every second ball, whereas we’re more of a footballing team.

“They didn’t give us a minute. We’ve got a few foreign lads in the team who don’t understand the streetwiseness that’s required in League Two and they’re going to have to learn that quickly.

“Credit to Morecambe because they are a decent team with a lot of experience at this level.

“After the equaliser you probably expect us to win the game, but unfortunately the late goal went the other way and that’s a disappointment.

“I’ve had a bit of everything in my three games so far, with the high against Yeovil (a 4-1 win), the sucker punch against Crewe (a 1-1 draw) and now a defeat.

“I’m not too disappointed about tonight because it was probably the best we’ve played. We could have won it and their keeper made a great save at 1-1, but we just fell short.”

Morecambe boss Jim Bentley was delighted to get one over on former Manchester United and England star Scholes.

Bentley said: “It’s a fantastic performance and a fantastic win.

“There was added spice coming up against one of football’s greats who was undefeated before today, but the players stayed focused at all times.

“Oldham is a dangerous place to come and they seemed to leave out some of their more mobile players and go with physical strength.

“Both sides created chances in an end-to-end game, but against Port Vale on Saturday and now tonight we’ve turned one point into three points in both of our last two games.

“We’ve had to evolve as a team recently and some of the players have had to find new positions, but the subs were excellent and we’ve got competition for places now.

“We reacted in the right way to Oldham’s goal and we weren’t completely camped in, even though they had momentum. We showed character from the first minute to the 90th.”
