Paul Scholes maintains unbeaten record in management as Oldham are held by Crewe

Paul Scholes maintained his unbeaten record in management but he had to settle for a point as Oldham conceded an injury-time equaliser to draw 1-1 at home with Crewe.

After beginning his Boundary Park reign with a 4-1 midweek thumping of Yeovil, former England midfielder Scholes saw the Latics pegged back at the death when George Ray levelled for the visitors.

Oldham struck after 23 minutes with an assist from goalkeeper Daniel Iversen, whose superb early kick sent Callum Lang racing clear to lob Ben Garratt from the edge of the box.

Iversen was soon called into action at the other end, beating away Paul Green’s low shot, but the hosts remained lively in attack and Johan Branger wasted an opening just before the break.

Zak Dearnley could have doubled the lead with a close-range header from Branger’s cross before Peter Clarke sent a 10-yard effort too close to Garratt.

Crewe gradually took a foothold in the contest and their equaliser came three minutes into stoppage time as Tom Lowery crossed to the far post and Ray bundled in from three yards.
