After being stripped of the Inter captaincy, Nerazzurri boss Luciano Spalletti has also revealed that Mauro Icardi refused to fly with the team to Vienna despite being called up for their Europa League match.
Icardi is locked in a dispute over a new deal at Inter, plus comments from wife and agent Wanda Nara have inflamed the situation and Samir Handanovic has now been given the Inter armband.
"Inter have an important game on Thursday," Spalletti told the press. "We'll have time after that to clarify Icardi's position.
"It was a difficult decision but it was supported by everyone at the club and made for the good of Inter as well as the team.
"He [Icardi] was called up but didn't want to travel with the rest of the squad to Vienna."
Rapid Vienna welcome Inter to the Allianz Stadion for their Europa League Round of 32 match on Thursday evening.
