Bury hold on for victory at Morecambe

Bury maintained their push on the league leaders with a nervous victory over battling Morecambe at the Globe Arena.

The Shakers stormed into three-goal lead before Morecambe hit back with two goals in five minutes to ensure a nervous finish for the visitors.

Danny Mayor fired the visitors into the lead with a neat goal in the 17th minute. Bury’s original attack saw Byron Moore denied by a smart save from Mark Halstead but the ball fell to Mayor who had all the time in the world to pick his spot and curl the ball into the bottom left hand corner of the Morecambe goal.

Bury then went on to create a number of chances with Mayor curling an effort just wide from the edge of the box before Halstead saved well from Nicky Maynard.

The Shakers’ pressure finally paid off when they doubled their advantage in first half injury time. Substitute Steven Old passed back to his goalkeeper without noticing Maynard lurking in the Shrimps’ area and the experienced striker held the ball up well before squaring for Jay O’Shea to slide the ball home from the edge of the area.

The visitors went three goals up on the hour mark with Mayor again instrumental with a run straight through the Morecambe midfield before teeing up O’Shea for his second with another fine finish from the edge of the area.

Five minutes later Morecambe hit back. The Shrimps were awarded a penalty when Nicky Adams brought down Ritchie Bennet with a clumsy challenge and although Joe Murphy saved Jordan Cranston’s effort, Bennett was on hand to slam home the loose ball.

The home side then added a second when Cranston’s cross was headed past Murphy by Old from eight yards out.

Morecambe continued tops with Kevin Ellison volleying over before O’Shea was denied a hat-trick by a late Halstead save.
