Kenny Jackett liking Portsmouth’s new Bogle-Vaughan partnership

Kenny Jackett saluted Fratton Park new-boy Omar Bogle after he scored his second goal in as many games to rescue a point for stuttering Portsmouth.

Bogle’s home debut strike cancelled out Malik Wilks’ first-half effort and saved Jackett’s men from slipping to a fourth defeat on the spin in Sky Bet League One.

Portsmouth manager Jackett, who saw defender Jack Whatmough hobble off early on, said: “That’s two goals in two for him since arriving and I’m really pleased for him.

“It was a good combination between him and James Vaughan.

“The first 30 minutes we were on top and put them under a lot of pressure.

“The injury and substitution cost us with my centre back and keeper got caught in two minds and with the pace of Wilks, he didn’t need a second invitation.

“It shouldn’t be like that we should be more organised straight from the change.”

The draw sees Pompey drop out of the automatic promotion places.

Jackett added: “Everybody wants to be as high as possible.

“The top two traditionally get well into the 80s (for points) so we need to find the winning mentality and more importantly a settled team that’s in a rhythm and knows its jobs and hopefully we can get back in those top two positions.”

Pompey were looking to bounce back after three successive league losses and had the first shot of the game when Ben Close volleyed wide from the edge of the penalty area.

Bogle should have scored at the back post from a corner and shortly after from a Jamal Lowe cross the Cardiff loanee headed tamely into the hands of Marko Marosi.

Doncaster opened the scoring on the half-hour mark through Wilks.

Pompey substitute Christian Burgess was caught under a long punt up-field and Wilks raced clear to slot under the hesitant Craig MacGillivray.

Portsmouth ended the half strongly, with Dion Donohue just missing the target from the edge of the 18-yard box.

The south coast side were level nine minutes after the re-start following a fumble by Rovers keeper Marosi.

Deadline day recruit Vaughan collected the loose ball and rounded stricken stopper Marosi before squaring for fellow transfer window arrival Bogle to slot home from close range.

Lowe threatened to put the hosts in front on 66 minutes when he got round the back of the Doncaster defence and shot narrowly wide on the turn via a deflection.

Prolific Doncaster marksman John Marquis forced home goalkeeper Craig MaGillivray tip a curling effort round the post at full stretch.

The game started to get stretched and Close forced Marosi to push a 20-yard drive over the bar with 15 minutes remaining.

Ronan Curtis also had a header caught on the line by Marosi from 12 yards out in the 88th minute.

Alfie May nearly won it for Doncaster in stoppage time when Matt Clarke gave away possession in a dangerous position but MacGillivray was equal to the shot.

Doncaster boss Grant said: “I thought it was a good game. It’s always tough to come to Fratton Park.

“It was a perfect goal and something we’ve been working on to break quickly in the transitions and Malik did well, he likes the big occasions and I’m really pleased for him.

“Their keeper has made a couple of excellent saves from Marquis and May, two top class saves, one out of the bottom corner and one out of the top corner.

“We came here and we were positive, we were positive in our changes from the last game and brought more pace and legs into the team and I think it worked  although we lost some control.

“We wanted to get in behind and it worked with the goal we scored.”
