MANCHESTER UNITED legend Rio Ferdinand wants Old Trafford chiefs to appoint Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as the Red Devils’ next permanent manager.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer took charge of Manchester United on an interim basis in December following the sacking of Jose Mourinho.

And he led his side to eight wins on the bounce prior to Tuesday night’s stirring come-from-behind 2-2 draw with Burnley.

Solskjaer’s impressive spell at the helm has seen plenty of Manchester United fans back him for the full-time gig.

Mauricio Pochettino, meanwhile, is thought to remain Ed Woodward and co.’s top target thanks to his exploits at Tottenham.

"50-something million - bargain now. It looks like a bargain.

"Next step, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. Sign him up! Let’s go."

Ferdinand and Solskjaer spent five years together under the legendary Sir Alex Ferguson at United.

And Solskjaer has made no secret of his desire to follow in Ferguson’s footsteps by managing United.

Earlier this week he further endeared himself to United fans by revealing his desire to win silverware.

And his comments came after fellow candidate for the job Mauricio Pochettino played down the importance of winning trophies.

"We’ve got the Champions League, we’ve got the FA Cup, we can’t just say top four and that’s it," Solskjaer said.

"We’ve got to look at: ‘Can we win something this year?’

"I am not here to discuss what Pochettino says and what other managers say.

"First of all, it’s the next game [that is vital] but we are about winning trophies, of course we are – and we can’t win the league this year.

"I think every manager wants to win every game, so I don’t think that is the point [Pochettino] was making [that trophies are not desirable].

"If you win trophies, that’s a fantastic day for everyone in the club; it’s just the best time of your life, that day when you win, because you never know when the next one is going to come.

"I am just saying that here at this club we are looking to win trophies."
