Stand-in Hibs boss Eddie May refuses to be drawn on Neil Lennon absence

Eddie May gave nothing away about the managerial situation at Hibernian after replacing head coach Neil Lennon for the 3-1 win over St Mirren at the Simple Digital Arena.

May, head of the academy set-up at Hibs, and his assistant Grant Murray were in charge in the absence of the Northern Irishman and his assistant Gary Parker, who were reportedly suspended on Friday night following a meeting with chief executive Leeann Dempster.

Saints striker Simeon Jackson opened the scoring in the 24th minute but the Leith side came back in the second-half, levelled through substitute Oli Shaw before further goals from defender Darren McGregor and former Saint Stevie Mallan secured their first in the league win in six games.

Before the post-match press conference began, May said: “I do not know what is going on with the club and Neil. I don’t know anything so I can’t say anything.”

The former Falkirk boss then added: “What happened, happened and I just got asked along with Alan (Combe, goalkeeping coach) and Grant Murray to take the team because of the situation.

“It is not for me to comment on anything like that.

“We will keep our distance and be very respectful towards Neil and the club to make the decision they are going to make.

“The players get paid to be professional and that’s what they are. You adapt and you just get on with your job.

“The players showed a lot of qualities and a lot of character and actually played a lot better in terms of football and were more fluid in the second half than the first half.”

Saints manager Oran Kearney noted Kyle McAllister’s missed chance in the second-half which would have put the home side 2-0 up and possibly taken them off the bottom of the table.

Hibs keeper Ofir Marciano blundered badly to present the ball to McAllister 35 yards from goal but he went left away from goal instead of right and his long-range effort missed the target.

Kearney said: “I’m disappointed not to take something from the game. Until that pivotal moment when we should go 2-0 I was very happy with how we had played.

“They say when you are down the bad breaks go against you. It is a big opportunity for Kyle and one everyone in the stadium can see.

“It is harder for him as he thinks someone is coming behind him and decides to shift it left.

“I spoke to him and I will not hang him out to dry. I thought he was probably as good a player as we had on the pitch today.

“To be fair to him he didn’t let his head go down after it and he came on stronger.”
