Terry McPhillips delighted with Blackpool response after choosing wrong team

Blackpool manager Terry McPhillips held his hands up and admitted his initial team selection was the wrong choice as his side scored two second-half goals to beat Coventry 2-0.

The Seasiders’ preparations were hampered when they had to reshuffle due to a Chris Long injury prior to the game and after a poor showing in the opening half, McPhillips decided to alter the shape of his team.

The alteration proved to be a success as Blackpool were quick out of the blocks in the second half to go two goals to the good via Nathan Delfouneso and Armand Gnanduillet.

And McPhillips was delighted with how his side, now six points off the play-offs, responded.

“We were not a very good side in the first half and an excellent one in the second,” he said.

“I’ll hold my hands up to that one. We lost Longy just before the game, he just felt a bit tight so we didn’t want to risk him so we jigged things round a little bit.

“Nick Anderton came in and we pushed (Marc) Bola further up but I hold my hands up it didn’t quite work.

“Once we changed it we looked a different team and second half we did really well.

“We looked better after the change, but you have to give them credit, they’re a good side, they like to pop it around.

“We rode our luck at times but Chris Mafoumbi played well, that’s three clean sheets for him now.”

Coventry boss Mark Robins was left to bemoan his side’s lack of cutting edge in front of goal as the Sky Blues suffered their third defeat in four games.

Robins had never beaten Blackpool as a manager and that record remains as the Sky Blues failed to make their first-half dominance pay.

“We had a great first half, it just feels like Groundhog Day because we are playing some really good stuff,” he said.

“I am going to have to take it on the chin and if that means getting stick or whatever I have to do it because we have got to get through it.

“We are almost there but it is going to take a little bit more time and a bit more work. We have played good football, we’ve pinned them in and done all the things that are right, and we don’t get the goal.

“We have to get that goal, and someone has to shoulder the responsibility.

“If you’re not scoring and missing chances you start to question yourself, you get that man on your shoulder questioning ‘am I going to score this?’ rather than being ruthless and doing it.

“The thing you can do is get through it by practice, which is where the work comes in.”
