Calderwood praises courageous Cambridge after dramatic win over Northampton

Cambridge manager Colin Calderwood lauded his side’s resilience after their thrilling 3-2 win at home to Northampton.

David Amoo scored deep into injury time to earn Cambridge a third successive victory.

They twice had to come from behind through Jevani Brown and George Taft, cancelling out strikes from Aaron Pierre and Junior Morias.

Brown also hit a post with a penalty when the score was 2-1 to Northampton before Amoo had the final say.

Calderwood said: “It’s great when it happens in your favour. Real credit to the boys. After 30-odd minutes the game deteriorated into them being able to control it a lot better than we’d have liked at home. We lost our way completely.

“The goal just before half-time kept us in it, without doing anything. At the start of the second half we find ourselves behind but from then on in we pushed and harried.

“We got the penalty which we missed. If ever a team had an excuse to lie down and say it’s not our day, it might have been in the second half, but they kept going.

“They’ve really dug deep. They’ve got a resolve. We kept getting opportunities. They’ve given their all and I think we have to admire their courage.

“It’s worked out as a terrific day and hopefully adds to what the fans demand of the team, which I want, but they’re seeing they’re getting it back in bucket loads in terms of endeavour and lots and lots of ability and skill.”

Keith Curle referred to his inexperienced Northampton side’s late loss by saying: “It’s a learning curve.

“If you have a look at the overall experience levels of the teams, we were young. We were young at the start and even younger during the game.

“Sometimes that pain, that hurt, can act as a driving force and a learning curve for some of the players. Not some; all of the players.

“We’re trying to put a foundation and principles in place throughout the footballing department, whereby we have a good understanding of the young players coming up are progressing and understand the demands of what’s required at first-team level so when they step up you’re not jumping into a new pond.

“We needed that little bit more robustness that you get sometimes with a little bit more experience, but you’ve got to say it was very pleasing.

“There’s areas that we still need to improve on; game management, understanding defensively, understanding having numbers back is not always an advantage sometimes.

“The positional play and understanding will improve but the more people get used to the elements I’m trying to bring into the team, we’ll be able to iron them out slowly.”
