MANCHESTER UNITED boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer thought Jose Mourinho was selling his squad short with his negative tactics, according to reports.

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has overseen six successive wins across all competitions since being named as Mourinho’s interim replacement last month.

The 45-year-old made a stunning return to Old Trafford in December, moving from Norwegian club FC Molde until the end of the season.

Manchester United have looked a side reborn under Solskjaer, however, with Cardiff, Huddersfield, Bournemouth, Newcastle, Reading and Tottenham all beaten.

As a result, there is a growing belief that Solskjaer could be given the United job on a permanent basis at the end of the season, as the club continue to eye Jose Mourinho successors.

To some, the return of the 1999 Champions League hero was a surprise.

But the Manchester Evening News say Solskjaer had made notes on United’s performances BEFORE taking over.

It is claimed he was present to watch the club’s 1-0 Champions League defeat to Juventus in October.

That was a chastening night for many at Old Trafford.

Though Juventus only won because of Paulo Dybala’s early strike, the Old Lady’s slick style was a vast contrast to United’s tame and turgid system.

Had it not been for David De Gea, the deficit could have been wider.

And the MEN say Solskjaer felt Mourinho was ‘selling his side a little short’ with his defensive targets.

The United of old would attack, attack, attack.

But, under Mourinho, forwards looked paralysed by fear - managing just two shots on target.

Solskjaer has, though, brought attacking football back to United.

And that has accumulated with the Red Devils’ upturn in form, with supporters now daring to dream of a top four finish.

Meanwhile, reports have claimed Solskjaer may be set to embark on a culling of several Mourinho lieutenants.

Club captain Antonio Valencia may leave for Serie A giants Inter Milan.

Marouane Fellaini, meanwhile, is said to be ‘hurt’ by Mourinho’s exit amid interest from AC Milan.

And Marcos Rojo could be another casualty with the Argentina international struggling with injuries.
