Sol Campbell applauds Macclesfield’s first-half display

Macclesfield boss Sol Campbell was happy with the ‘bright start’ that set the tone for his side’s 2-0 victory against mid-table Grimsby.

Tyrone Marsh and Scott Wilson scored in the space of seven first-half minutes for the Silkmen, who are now three points from safety.

Campbell said: “We started brightly and it was a great game for us. It’s a nice pitch here, and a big pitch.

“We were well drilled this week, and we had to be.

“Grimsby are a great side, so we knew that we really had to start sharply and positively, which we did, and I thought we were bright in all aspects of the game.

“Tyrone (Marsh) has taken his chance and he is starting to nick goals here and there.

“Both of them have come from set-pieces, which is quite nice to see. I thought all of the lads played really, really well.

“All over the pitch they ran their socks off, and played football as well. It was good and pleasing for me to see, we got the ball down and played.

“We responded well and, altogether, it was a great afternoon.”

Chances were few and far between during the opening stages, but Macclesfield took the lead in the 25th minute with their first real attack.

Miles Welch-Hayes took aim from a free-kick, but it needed a slight touch from Marsh to redirect it past James McKeown and into the Grimsby net.

A matter of minutes later, it was 2-0 to the Silkmen.

Mitch Rose was caught in possession, with Wilson picking up the pieces before coolly slotting under the body of McKeown.

Grimsby striker Wes Thomas went close upon the restart, while Macclesfield had one cleared off the line at the other end before sealing the points.

Grimsby boss Michael Jolley added: “It was extremely disappointing because we were slow in the way that we started.

“We conceded two poor goals, which meant they could put bodies behind the ball. I think that we fell behind the standards that we have set in recent weeks.

“I don’t want to say too much about it. I’m quite cross about the performance, but these players have done well for us and we must not overreact to the defeat.

“We didn’t put enough pressure on the ball and our tempo was too slow. We spoke at length about how we wanted to play this game, and we weren’t able to do that.

“I think this was the day our injuries caught up with us, but it’s not an excuse because we didn’t play well enough and we thoroughly deserved to lose the game.”
