De Gea, 28, has 18 months left on his deal after United triggered an extension amid speculation about his future.

Martial, 23, is in the same position and the club are determined to pin him down on a five-year contract with Arsenal, Spurs, Chelsea and Inter Milan all interested in the striker.

His agent Philippe Lamboley admitted in the summer that his player wanted to leave, with former manager Jose Mourinho willing to ship him out.

But now caretaker boss Solskjaer will work to convince both stars to commit their futures to Old Trafford.

"It’s down to the players but when you’re at Manchester United there isn’t a lot of greener grass on the other side,” Solskjaer said.

You are at the best place. It’s the biggest club in the world.

"For me, I would hope I can help or guide these players to maybe tip them over to thinking they want to stay at this club.

"If you are a regular at United you should grasp the opportunity to become part of the history.”

Solskjaer revealed that United agreed to sell him to Tottenham during his illustrious career but he told Sir Alex Ferguson he wouldn’t go.

He added: “The club agreed to sell me to Spurs one time and I said, ‘No thank you’.

"My agent wanted me to go but I knew I was at the best place. I wasn’t sure the grass was greener somewhere else.

United are back in action this afternoon when they host Bournemouth, looking to build on their strong start under Solskjaer.

Martial is due to return to the side after sitting out the 3-1 win over Huddersfield on Boxing Day.

Romelu Lukaku is also set to be involved after sitting out the last two games, but Alexis Sanchez is not likely to return yet.
