JACK WILSHERE has been dealt a fresh injury blow as he faces a long spell out of action with yet more ankle problems.

The midfielder played five minutes of his latest comeback match against Newcastle earlier this month, only to be sidelined again immediately.

And it may get even more grim for Wilshere, 26, unless the issue with his ankle is cleared up by a few weeks of rest.

Hammers insiders fear that the injury-prone star may need further surgery, which could rule him out for most of the remainder of the season.

Wilshere signed for West Ham on a free transfer in the summer after quitting Arsenal.

But he has managed just five appearances since then because of ongoing fitness issues.

West Ham boss Manuel Pellegrini described Wilshere as a ‘£100million’ player when fully fit.

But the latest setback comes just at the time when Pellegrini hoped the player had put the worst of his injury problems behind him.

The Hammers have managed four wins on the spin despite a lengthy sick-list that also includes winger Andriy Yarmolenko and midfielder Manuel Lanzini, who are both unlikely to play again this season.

Defender Winston Reid is also a long way from being declared fit.

West Ham’s 2-0 win at Fulham on Saturday capped the team’s best run since 2014 and lifted the club to ninth in the league.
